In 1978, a federal court trial revealed that Haley copied 81 passages from 'The African', including several almost verbatim descriptions. Haley eventually settled out of court, admitting that material from Courlander's book had found its way into his novel, and paid a reported $650,000 to Courlander and his publisher.
Haley never admitted to intentional plagiarism. He attributed the inclusion of the text to his extensive note-taking process, claiming he unknowingly incorporated uncredited notes provided to him by fans and student researchers over the years
